Bolting leeks
« on: July 03, 2021, 13:53 »
Help please. Some of the leeks I planted about two months ago have started bolting. Not many but one or two in each  row. Do you think they are all going to bolt?
I was looking at possible causes. One was too much fertiliser. I have been adding a  small handful of dried cow fertiliser to each row every week or so. But nothing more than that.

They may do I’m afraid. Probably hot weather (assuming you’ve had some!

I'd be surprised if they needed that much fertiliser, but erratic weather is far more likely to cause the plant stress and thus cause it to bolt.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I grow leeks although I do not sow them myself. We can get very hot conditions during the summertime and I have to say I never have problems with my leeks bolting. I grow mine in a raised bed and I add plenty of manure but do not add much else. They are dibbed in down about 15 cm. We have not come into the dry part of the summer yet but when it arrives they will be watered from time to time. My leeks are planted out around end March and they go right through to the following spring when if there are any left the will then go to flower.
One thing that comes to mine is it possible you planted them out early enough to get them a severe frost and then this has been followed by a long warm spell that could be the issue ?
