Kelvedon Wonder Peas Eaten By Unknowns
« on: June 27, 2021, 14:48 »
Unfortunately something has got to my peas, they only just produced flowers, haven't had that happen before. Anyone any ideas what got to them, I've attached photos, but basically it looks a bit like the stalks with the flowers have been chomped off, not sure its very clear in the pics. More importantly what can I do to prevent this happening again. They were covered with enviromesh originally until they were mature enough. Should I just leave that on, or do the flowers need pollinating? When netting is used, the plants seem to get tangled up in it and its difficult to harvest them. Any suggestions at all

I’d suspect pigeons given the amount of damage. A run of netting either side will keep them off as they have to land and then attack them by walking to the plants.

I'd say pigeons also. We have to net right over our crops or they land on top, they'll even land on the net and use their weight to squash it down onto the plants if they can. Our peas are now grown in the brassica cage before kale goes in.

Looks like pigeons to me too; you don't need to worry about netting excluding pollinators as peas are self-pollinating.
