Radishes

fresh seeds, correct soil, watered daily - nice looking round radish, but almost hollow inside.  The innards, are very thin.   Why  ?    Mrs Bouquet

Perhaps too high temperatures, or lack of nutrients, or left in the ground too long?

Mrs B, try 'Unwins Annabelle F1' seed. Not cheap, but can easily be sown in seed trays, plonked in a warm spot, safe from slugs etc.

This year is the first year I've managed to get a crop worth using, and there are plenty more to come along!

The seeds are big enough to sow singly, an inch apart both ways, and I do a tray every three weeks or so!

Worth a pop?

My radishes are rubbish this year.  I'm sure it's because it's too hot and dry - although they have been watered well.  My carrots are also notable by their absence.  Four different varieties - sowed twice, and still only about a dozen seedlings showing.  Parsnips, however, came up like weeds.  There's no accounting for the vagaries of allotment growing, but every season is different.  Perhaps next year we'll all have amazing radishes, but I'll try Growster's suggestion for Annabel seeds and see how they fare.

Actually, there's plenty of time to get several sowings going, if you have the room.

I just sow a half-tray, perhaps with something else the other end, and get about twenty rads ready every few weeks - it is, however, the first time I've ever managed to do succession sowing properly...

Had to this year really:0~

How deep is that tray and what is the shallowest do you think could be used?

Exactly like that, DD!

Just a normal two-three inch tray is just fine, BR!

Make sure they're watered regularly - they're mostly water anyway!

The tray in the piccie is, of course, the good old cat litter tray

It wouldn't be any other tray, DD!

You'll be pleased to know that I've followed your instructions to the letter by using deep trays - and modules, and some items, like leeks have just scorched away - I can't keep up with the noise from their growing 24 hrs a day...
