Main Crop Potatoes
« on: June 01, 2019, 20:18 »

Thinking of using the last piece of space at my allotment (paved) to grow some main crop potatoes in containers.

But have I left it too late?

I hope not - have not got my main crop in yet! I want them to last into the winter and I am rubbish at getting them stored right.
I never did much good with containers. I know the advert pics show a barrel overflowing with potatoes but I seldom got more than half a dozen usable ones.

I'd make sure it's an early maincrop like Desiree, they will bilk up quickly in the time they have left - or else something like Sarpo Mira because it seems to carry on growing, after most potatoes are dying back, plus of course they won't get blight :)

I'm in Australia. I planted potatoes in a container in late January (equal to late July UK) one year. I got a great crop of smallish (size of a large goose egg) potatoes. Enough for a few meals. I boiled them in their skins and served with lashings of butter. Heaven :)

planting main crop potatoes in same place as finished early crop?
