Growing mushrooms in coffee grounds
« on: March 26, 2015, 09:23 »
I am totally hooked on this idea and have been reading about it in the last few days. I was thinking about having a go at growing oyster mushrooms as these are said to be  easier to grow than other types of mushrooms.
I was not looking at buying a kit but growing them from scratch, there is a lot of information on the web on the different methods people use, but I was thinking has anyone on the forum had a go at growing their own mushrooms, I do understand that everything needs to be sterile.
Well has anyone had a go then ? or would you be interested in having a go.

I bought one of the kits, bought an 'unwanted gift' from ebay making it cheaper. It was fun but even at half price that I paid for it rather expensive way o getting mushrooms! I justified it as being educational for the kids :).  You can buy the spore online quite cheaply I think.  I like the idea of the mushroom dowels you can put into logs, I think they keep on producing.  Good luck.
My favourite weed is a raspberry ;)

I 'grew' lots of mushrooms as a by product of having 60 bags of mushroom compost delivered. They were fantastic and kept on producing.....

Inlaws gave us some one Christmas. They had carefully researched it and chosen from a specialist supplier (rather than just buying a few from a man-in-a-van-in-a-layby!!)

They never came to anything though, even several years later ...

I also tried the dowelling drilled into logs thing - bought them from one of the well known seed catalogues.  Also came to nothing after 2 years of waiting.  In fact, the logs were used for firewood this week - won't be trying that again.

The coffee grounds thing sounds interesting though.  Will have to check it out.

i have brought logs that have been plugged. the person i bought them off said they were very picky about where they grow, they either grow well or not at all. i'll see this year mine will grow or not.

i have started to grow some in newspaper. got lots of myselin, just chilled them and put them in the shed to hopefully produce.

i think it will depend where you put them. from what i've been told they need to be out of the wind and direct sunlight, but they do need light. also need to be kept damp/ moist.

If coffee grounds don't work you could try the plug method.

The plugs are interesting but I don't think waiting a year for mushrooms would go down well in our house !
The best way I have seen for growing the myselin was in a petri dish then watering it down and injecting it into the straw or coffee grounds. and then saving a little bit of the myselin and growing it again in a new petri dish,
for the next lot, very cleaver a bit like a ginger beer plant. I must say the kits are quite expensive. I took some mushroom prints the other day and cut up the paper and added it to some compost, we will have to see what happens. I am just going to use one of my propagator's and keep it in the dark it will be nice and warm and humid in there.
