Chitting maincrop spuds!
« on: April 30, 2014, 19:19 »
I am planning on planting two varieties of maincrop spuds this year: Pink Fir Apples and Maris Piper.

The ground is ready for them; however, they're taking their sweet time to chit! They are chitting but very slowly for some reason, and they're chitting in the same place and position as last year.

How important is it to get them chitting properly before planting? Time is getting on, etc!
I may be Welsh, but I love ewe anyway!

They're chitting slowly, so you've broken the dormancy and that's the main aim!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Plant them now - maincrop just take longer than an early so get them in soon.

I stopped chitting mine the other year and I got a good crop but just a bit later.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

When I got my pots -pent javelin , charlotte and Maris Piper. I began chitting all them  at the same time, when planting time came I put them all in at the same time with the same size chits on them all and the charlottes have still to show- that was about 3weeks ago and the maris is the same size a s the p javelin, a good few inches
