Feeding potatoes
« on: June 23, 2013, 00:57 »
I always add chicken pellets when planting my spuds but I wonder how I can feed them later. I have lots of comfrey tea, which I think they would benefit from but I'm not sure how accurate I can be with the watering can - the stalks can be thrown up some way from the  centre of the plant.

How do you folks feed your spuds after planting and earthing up?

I've heard that you can use tomato feed b/c they are in the same family as tomatoes.  I have never tried it though.  If you do and it works let me know  :)

A balanced feed , Fish blood and bone or Growmore when planting and topped up after 6 week's is all mine get. Tomato feed is for the production of fruit. You are growing a tuber/root so i would not think that tomato feed is a good option.

Pottasium is THE nutrient that potatoes use more than any other, even nitrogen. It's availability can have a huge effect on overall quality and yield.
Both comfrey tea and tomato feed will be perfect for spuds.

Thanks everyone. Looks like the comfrey tea will be put to good use.

The main point of my question, however, was to do with application. Do people just water the whole row and let the rain wash it down, or do you try to target the individual plants with the feed? I have five rows of spuds, each sixteen foot in length, but I imagine others have much more and I can't see people repeatedly refilling a watering can with comfrey feed to water that lot. Or maybe they do. So, how do you do it?

Cheers all.

I do it with a can with a coarse rose on. Give them a good soaking under the foliage. You can, in future, throw comfrey leaves into the trench before planting. These will give a good direct feed as they decompose.

I just water the whole row.

I place a handful of wilted Comfrey leaves under each seed potato as I plant them out and then don't bother feeding them again as I grow them in a raised bed of decomposing compost so they get all the nutrients they need as things break down.

Growmore when planting and then tomato feed later but I am never certain as to when to start with the feed and how often. This year I started when the foliage was  high and have been doing it fortnightly. What schedule are other tomato feeders using?

I give them a good soaking with it once a week-10 days. All the outdoor ones are in bags or containers so I know they get what they are given.

I usually dig in some manure before planting, but this year I used growmore and an occasional feed wtih tomato feed. All was excellent until today when the wind devastated all the tayty plants, so it hasn't really mattered about anything I did.

The wind has reeked havoc with mine as well but the stems are intact so I am hoping that they will be OK. Did it just flatten yourplants or did it break the stems?
