Washing enviromesh
« on: March 28, 2013, 01:08 »
I've got a big piece of enviromesh (or Wondermesh actually) that's been sitting outside all winter covering my brassicas, and it's gone all green and horrid. I seem to remember someone on here saying they chucked theirs in the washing machine. Is it ok to do that? If so, 30 degrees, I presume, and how about drying it, tumbledryer or airing cupboard?

Mrs Digger washed some of mine without me having to ask permission!

Cool wash - don't tumble it - and not being absorbent it'll soon drip-dry on  washing line.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Sorry to ask but is this the white stuff? quite stiff and rather tightly woven? I've inherited loads and it's filthy

Sounds like it.

It's very fine mesh, rather than fleece and you can't rip it by hand.

I use the scaffold netting to cover stuff and have washed it in the washing machine, spun on a fast spin (to remove most of the water) and hung up to dry. Works fine and the nets look good as new.
Did the same (washing them that is) for the fleece tunnels (minus the metal hoops obviously) that I got half price from B&Q at the end of last season. They came up a great.  ::)
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

I wash my Enviromesh very infrequently as it's at the plot but it does come up a treat.  It's very expensive so it does require looking after to get years worth of life from it

Well I chucked it in the machine - and it came out not much different than it went in :)

I think the problem is that it's quite a big piece of mesh. I managed to cram it in but I don't think there was enough room for the machine to actually move it around too much. I've now had to resort to soaking it in the bath tub. The water did instantly turn black, so hopefully I've at least got some of the filth out.

I have a washing line on my lotty. Yes, really.
I use it to hang my fleece/mesh/netting when I've taken it off the beds and give it a quick rinse with the hosepipe to get rid of the worst, then leave it to dry for a couple of hours.
