what I did NOT do on the plot today.
« on: March 28, 2013, 19:25 »
well. normally by now with a day off or two coming up to Easter, I would have at least had the spuds in. Anma d a row of peas. And some broad beans. I did NOT do any of these things because my plot is still under a couple of feet of snow. When it eventually melts the soil will be heavy and soaked. Oh well ... late season this year !

It is frustrating not being able to get on with jobs on the plot especially when there is a bank holiday weekend.  I've also booked leave to take the rest of the week off as well as this is traditionally the time I get on with big jobs I would be unable to do during a normal weekend visit - I have some health problems which if I overdo it, at least I can have a day off at home to rest up.

However, it's not quite "late season" gardening just yet - last year when I was clearing my stuff off one plot, I was so frustrated watching others get on with the digging and planting while I was still running around but by the time I was ready to get on, the weather changed and all those early birds lost a lot of stuff while a lot of my stuff came up just fine.  So swings and roundabouts and a lot of patience, and all will turn out okay in the end  ;)

I did nothing yesterday, but TODAY - well, today's the day I clean out the greenhouse and get a bed ready for spuds. even though I can't plant them yet!

Here's hoping... ;)

Today I put the frames of the mini polytunnels together and filled trays of seed compost to sit in the open. The compost in the bags is far wetter than the ground so better out in the wind drying off.

The bloke on one side of had a minging bonfire (it smelt too) and another bloke came down saying he was going to see if there was any more horse manure on the pile as he would barrow in a bit more to rot down for next year if there was.

But nothing is planted.

Didn't get the spud bed done.  :(
Did get the greenhouse empty, and dug up the beds in them, and replaced with fresh compost from the dalek.  :)

Too hot for a bit . but back to the normal freezing temps now - about 1C here.

I have plenty of plants on the windowsill that are leggy and looking for sun. Will probably have to go back to square one and start again.

Spuds going in in about 2 weeks
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

I've kept seed potatoes as long as early May and they've been fine.
