Chilean Guavas
« on: March 26, 2013, 17:54 »
There's nothing else for it really in this weather but to lust after plants in brochures.
I have purchased three Chilean Guava plants from Suttons Seeds (I'm sure there must be an apostrophe in there somewhere - it's probably Sutton's but the interweb people seem so flippant with the apostrophe these days  ;) )
Looking at the blurb and at other articles on the web I can't imagine why they aren't grown more widely. If one is to believe what is written they seem to be heaven sent - hardy down to -10c, need no pruning, unfussy about soil, easy to propagate etc.
Does  anybody have personal experience of them?
If you can't be an excellent example be a terrible warning...

They sound fascinating. From the bit of reading I have done, it seems they are moderately sensitive to frost, so for example in my area would probably want to be covered for most of the winter in horti fleece as when it gets foggy we can build up 'hoar' type frosts, very penetrating.
