Hardy Kiwi Fruit
« on: March 11, 2013, 15:29 »
Hi,

A friend just told me about a kiwi fruit from Siberia called: Actinidia arguta "Issai".

It is supposed to handle temperatures way colder than the uk, and produces lots of small sweet kiwi fruit.

Has anyone heard of/tried it? I'm tempted! :)

Cheers!

Have a go and let everyone know. I planted a self fertile "Jenny" and this will be its second full summer since planting so hopefully may get a fruit or two this year. Ours was meant to be hardy but I planted the roots outside and the plant is growing in a greenhouse.

It looks fab! I will be clearing an area for fruit bushes etc this year so I have bookmarked the page to look at later in the year. It almost seems a bit too good to be true.... Why have we never seen these fruits in shops anywhere?

I popped one in last year to see what would happen and it does have buds appearing, but then my local weather is probably tropical compared to yours Pragmatist, being daan sarf an all!  ::)

Hi , I got one from D.T Browns last year ( Feb ) About 10 quid I think, (self fertile )

At the moment it is about 18 inches tall , it is under cover in a pot until it gets bigger and then

I will plant in the ground on a South facing wall.

According to D.T brown it sets fruit after one year , it doesn't look as though it will be big

enough this year unless it grows dramatically .

I've just found this at Victoriana Nursery and slightly cheaper here:

http://www.spaldingbulb.co.uk/product/miniature-kiwi-issai-/

But I note that while they say they can stand frosts of -29 they also recommend growing in a greenhouse, which seems to be a bit at odds with itself to me.

Victoriana also say that they are miniature and compact but need spacing at 16ft apart

I think I'll hang on and read a few more reviews first.

I will also be trying this out this year.  I plan to buy two Issai plants and try and train them up a pergola.  Eeek, I hope they work!!
