Storing potatoes - am I doing it right?
« on: September 02, 2012, 20:03 »
Hey,

Just wondering if I could get some feedback on how I'm storing some potatoes. They are in a banana box in the shed and inside there are two layers with the potatoes stored in plastic seed germinating containers that the previous allotment occupier had.

The second picture is of the top layer. Each layer is separated by the thick paper this comes in the banana boxes and they have a load of circular holes for airflow in the middle.

The box is in direct sunlight so I'm guessing I should shift that into a corner (but still raised I would expect?). Other than that is this idea okay?

I think they may get a bit to damp and sweaty in plastic cells.

Storing them in Hessian or paper sacks is more usual.  Keep them somewhere cool and dark but frost free.

Inspect them regularly for rotten potatoes.

I keep mine in cardboard boxes, but just piled in anyhow. Flaps are weighted down to keep them shut, so the potatoes are in the dark ;)

I keep the boxes on the bench in a brick shed.

If your shed is a wooden one, make sure you cover the boxes when it gets really cold, or the spuds will freeze, even in the shed

Thanks, just ordered some.

Probably would have been helpful if I'd have gone here first

Boxes are fine but not with the plastic trays in them.

I like hessian sacks - they smell nice  ::)

I like the idea of hessian sacks but I find boxes easier to inspect potatoes without tipping them out regularly.
