As my (still unfinished) raised beds are relatively shallow, I opted to remove the turf. I think the trick is like most things, to use the right tool. My father-in-law lent me a special rounded spade with a slight dog-leg just above the blade. This is designed specifically for removing turf and does the job really well. Once you get the knack it cuts the effort required by at least half, probably more so.

I should have saud at the time IHM, sorry!

pleeease don't use any nasty chemicals  :cry: the frogs hate them as they breath through their skin (and they are your best line of defense against the slugs!) just a sheet of membrane, like the stuff you put under gravel should do it.
