Plant ID please.
« on: June 15, 2009, 16:52 »
Can anyone tell me what this is please? I have about 4 or 5 in the garden at the moment, and Liam has started pulling the berries off.... Thankfully not eaten any, but I would prefer to know what I am dealing with.

Also, what might this be hiding between the Poppies and Lavender in the shady corner?

The one at the back looks like honeysuckle to me (could well be wrong) and the ones in the front look like oxeye daisies.
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

I've changed my mind, sorry. I don't think it is honeysuckle now I can see it clearer.

First one with berries is a Hypericum - can't say which for sure as there are some 350 species plus garden varieties. The berries are long lasting and used by florists.
It will probably seed itself around but can easily be pulled up when small. It can also be hard pruned if getting straggly or taking up too much space.

Second one is an 'ice plant'  or Sedum variety. Again lots of species and garden varieties, most have flat heads of red or pink flowers in summer,  lasting well and turning to rusty seedheads which can be left all winter. Flowers are very attractive to bees and butterflies.
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

The shrub in the first photo is Hypericum hidcote, and the plant in nthe second pic is a Sedum. Probably Autumn Joy. :D

Strange how they look different.

My berries are about the size of blueberries, but bright orange/red.

There is a shrubby hypericum with reddy orange berries.

Here is a photo:

Hope this helps  :)

Thank you all for your help, I know now that the berries are indeed poisonous, so I can now begin the task of 'safe guarding' this beautiful bush from my toddlers curious hands!

I believe I will add some sort of low level screening from that side of the garden to keep him away as he has already picked one or two berries, but I was able to stop him before they reached his mouth.
