On the practical poultry forum they recommend hemcore

http://www.hemcore.co.uk/

it's made from hemp and is ment to be very absorbant and stop it smelling as much (plus it's easier to compost).
Not tried it myself yet although I'm getting some for the next time I clean out the run - although they said only to use it where you don't stand as it sticks to your shoes when damp! (alright for me as I have an eglu so can't go in the run)

I have play bark in the run (which is covered and doesn't get wet) and Hemcore in the coop (and nest box).  Hemcore really is very good.  Very absorbent and as purplekat said reduces any odour.  It comes in a compressed bail and lasts for ages.
