Whole tree chip - Questions about use
« on: August 12, 2008, 20:23 »
I have accessible to me a huge pile of wood chip that's been left to rot for a long while (1 year +). Just going to dig some of it up for the rancid floor of my chicken run i found underneath the top inch or two lots of white spores & powder. Would i be able to use it for my chicken run? Or would it a. get stuck in their necks b. kill them c. cause them to spontaneously combust

No, you can't use it for the chicken run in my opinion.

The fungal spores would be dangerous for them, and for you.  Wood chip can be splintery and injure their feet causing bumble-foot.

Chippings from council the log shredder thingy or my chainsaw. Never had any problems with bumble foot etc, they seem to spend hours digging about in it. I'll have to keep a closer eye on them now Aunty

Sorry    but as I'm a confirmed cheapskate I use whatever is to hand or free as long as I feel it won't harm them. People buy composted bark etc on here for their hens I cant see much difference to be honest.

Here you go wood chips in use mixed with a bit of paper shredding's 'n straw.
Front of the run and they've thrown most of the chips out again after 4 days

This is the floor of the shed

And wood chips and paper in the nest box, mid morning rush

I line the bottom of the nest box with cardboard as they move all the bits out of the way then crack the eggs on the hard floor
