Something to climb up an arch!
« on: April 02, 2012, 21:21 »
Hi all,

Any suggestions for something to grow up a 6 foot high 4 foot wide and quite deep arch I'm planning to make out of natural wood.

It needs to be safe for kids, do all roses have thorns? Sorry if that is a stupid question.

Also it would be nice if it looked as good as possible all year round.

I quite like the idea of having a few different things climbing up then that flower at different times of year, would this work or would one just take over?

Many thanks for all your help

If not roses then Clematis would look good in flower but is seasonal so things could be a bit bare during the winter months. Jasmin is another option tiny flowers keeps some of it leaves. If you don't need flowers and have plenty of space you could try virgina creeper but beware it can get quite rampant if left unchecked, same with "mile a minute vine". Honeysuckle would also work as would passion flower. For me honeysuckle up one side, clematis up the other and let them meet at the top.

I have exactly that, but it is bare in the winter. ::)
