A Big Hedge

Have a big hedge at the top of garden its about 7-8 foot high would it be ok to cut it down to about 5foot, if so when is the best time to do it.

Is this a privet hedge?
If so you can cut it now but it may be a while until the top returns to being nice and green this is because once you cut the hedge top off the hedge will put all its growing into the side shoots but the top will start to come back and if you keep trimming the sides offten ,very offten the hedge then will put all its growing power into the top growth.

Go 6" lower than you want it so the new growth fills the gap and can be pruned to form a dense top.
