apple cider vinegar

i bought some acv at the weekend and it says to mix 50ml with drinking water! but that measurement is for horses!! can anyone tell me how much i should put in for the girls? they have 2 large size drinkers (the ones with the red bottoms) (thats the drinkers not the hens :shock: )

I usually just put a splash (about as much as you'd put milk in tea) into a 5ltr drinker; any more and it flavours the water and they don't drink it. :roll: There's a mistake I won't make again

Our drinker is one with a green bottom, holds about 4l I reckon - I just put a 'glug' in that - same size glug as the horse gets in his tea - they go mad for it

what does the apple cider vinegar do for them :?: please forgive me for not knowing but i still class myself as being new to all this

well apple cider vinegar is a very natural product -the stuff to use is "unrefined" so not from a supermarket but from an animal feed store. The reason being is the active part of ACV is the "tannin" this raises the acidity in the gut making it hostile to bacteria, occyst (coccidiosis) and therefore allows the natural flora to proliferate, and so boosting a healthy gut, no need really for a probiotic if your chooks have access to ACV. I have also read recently that it may be beneficial in chooks with a cold and producing lots of mucous.
ACV also contains trace minerals and other nutrients. So you can see if a bird has a healthy gut it is able absorb all the required nutrients and minerals more effectively from their diet.

I just put a splash in the water for about a week every now and then.

I've had to start putting the vinegar in after the water though, they have a bowl at the moment and one daft bird drank the neat vinegar when I put it in first...she seemed to like it...hope it didn't give her indigestion!
