dumped kittens - am i doing the right things?
« on: October 24, 2011, 11:18 »
a very nice lady decided to dump two little kittens in the park the other day.  i was in the garden and saw her do it. just walking along the footpath and slung a black poop bag right over the fence.

thought it was rubbish and carried on clearing the roses but then the bag started to mew...very loudly.

anyway to cut a long story short, i've brought them home. they are two black tabby girls(?) and look like they are around 7/8 weeks old.

now we're not really cat people in this house but i've fed them, given them a dose of spot on and they seem to be doing ok. they are using the litter tray (thank god!)

i've called the vets and they'll check them over and give them some jabs and wormer. i'm not too bothered about the cost as long as they are ok. they don't like the dogs so i've put them upstairs and kept them quiet. they need to put on some weight.

have i missed anything? the poos seem ok but are very pongy...any remedy to that?

once they're fed up i'll need to find them homes - hopefully with rescue back up. apparently selters are full to bursting with unwanted cats and kittens right now  :(

why don't people spay or neuter their pets?  >:(

Unfortunately Shetan, it seems to be happening a lot these days.  :(  It's wonderful that you have taken them in to your home.  :)  If they are thriving then I don't think you are doing anything wrong but I'm sure your local Cats Protection will be able to answer any concerns. They should also be able to give you a voucher for free neutering and may help with the cost of their jabs (FEV & FELV) while you are looking after them. Sadly, most shelters are full at the moment because of these problems and it makes me both angry and sad. But good for you for taking the poor mites in.  :D

I would call Cats Protection and they will take them off your hands and will probably pay the vet fee.  My son, when he was little, found an elderly cat close to death as it had fallen into a stream and couldn't get out. I rushed it to a vet but the vet rang CPL there and then and they came forward to help without any hesitation

It's the fair thing to do if you  have dogs and can't keep the cats yourself.

Good on your for speedy intervention. You're an angel  :)

thanks guys.

i've already called the shelter and they're happy for me to hold on to them for the time being - they're full.  :(

i've agreed that if the kittens become agitated by the dogs - i'll call and they'll find emergency back up. but the dogs aren't allowed upstairs and they're leaving well alone anyway so we're doing ok for the time being.

hubby and i are both lactose intolerant. i gave them some warm lactofree milk when i picked them up because they were freezing cold. is that ok? should i give them any more milk from time to time? they're drinking room temperature water and seem happy with that. my vet has very kindly agreed to lower the vacs charge and one of the nurses has offered to pay for the worming...so thats very nice of them. i'll be taking them on wednesday.

i've also set aside a warm wicker basket for wednesday night with it being diwali so i'm trying to cover all basis.

all things aside though...they are right little stunners!

sadly no...i did shout after her but she just kept going.

i saw the local beat officer and she did take down the details...so hopefully they'll find her. the officer did say though - that people who do this kind of thing, usually do it away from their home patch.

the only thing i'm thankful for is that the kittens are weaned and litter trained....

Bless you for caring. I am not a cat person either but this sort of treatment of any animal makes my blood boil. What a dreadful death they would have had if you hadn't picked up on their mewing. >:(

If the kittens are as old as you think they are, they will not need milk at all really, so a spot of lactose free is probably ok. The vet will know how old they are.

Good luck with them. Keep in touch with rescue just to remind them you need homes for them.

I totally go with this sentiment!

At that age they should be OK with just water and kitten food, make sure the vet sexes them - they start very young!! They also need to be kept warm, unfortunately theres not much you can do about the smell, but I assure you its perfectly normal.  Once they are fully vaccinated and a bit older (I think 4 or 6 months but not sure) they will be able to do their business outside, but I expect I'm telling you stuff you already know.

Well done you!

The glass is neither half empty or half full - it is simply the incorrect size! Find a new glass!

Well done for doing the right thing.

There are so many ways to home them, around here pet shops will buy any they can get, always crying out for them ( not to say the cat's people arn't full up too, because they are).

Both ours are rescues, 1 from cat's protection & 1 cut out the middle man & left her unloved home & moved in.  :D

Well done Shetan. I wouldn't worry about milk as they appear to be weaned. Water is fine. A nice cosy bed in a warm room, some food and drink and a litter tray are about all they need physically. Give them lots of cuddles so they are used to humans and will be easier to rehome. Worming, flea treatment and vaccinations are done or in hand so you are certainly taking better care of them then many people do of their own wanted pets! You're doing a great job.

Well done Shetan.  You could post some pictures on here and you never know someone might offer them a loving home.  At least you know that members on here are animal lovers.

thanks guys....just to update - my neighbour has had a look at them and she is 100% we have 2 little girls. i'll try to post pictures but i'm rubbish at stuff like that.

they've eaten and sleep really well but don't seem to be drinking much...i've got them their own pet carrier with a washed blanket borrowed from the pooches which they love to hide in. they're in the back, south facing bedroom so lots of warmth and sunshine.

i'm not letting them out because they haven't had vacs yet but hopefully the sun won't disappear before wednesday!

last night they started crying around about this time so i went and got them and had them in with us..then when they were asleep, i put them back.

shehra is desperate to make friends and keeps trying to lick them so i'm keeping their downstairs time to a minimum but they're calming down a little and hopefully they'll grow to like him which might help when rehoming them.

i don't want to get attached and i haven't given them names but i'd like to give them something to identify each one....i like the name vesper (bond girl casino royal) so i'm thinking the other one should have a bond girl name too...any good ones?

i'll be careful not to call them using the names....they're just for me!

Are you feeding them wet food? if so usually this contains almost enough liquid for them.  Obviously they still need water but you will rarely see them drink - in fact if they drink too much it could indicate a kidney problem.  So that should be some comfort.
