Afternoon All,  Finally, our coup & run are ready - will be collecting our new feathered friends in next day or so.  However - we are still dithering about the best type of bedding to use for them - we must take into account that OH wants to recycle thru existing compost bins & therefore doesn't really want to use wood shavings (they take too long to compost!) What about shredded paper?  Clearly our delivered daily's could save additional money but should we use anything else as well?  All suggestions greatly received, thank you

I use hemcore, it's a horsey bedding and very very absorbant. It contains citronella which helps with flies, and it composts quickly. Shredded paper can get tangled around their legs unless it's cross shredded but it really isn't that absorbant.

We use straw supplemented with shredded paper when we have enough.  Caught our chookies by surprise the first time they got paper.  They tried to eat it.

But they seem quite happy on either now.

we put down sheets of newspaper under the perches - roll it up in the morning and chuck it on the compost.

(and we use straw in the nest box, but when that's soiled it goes on the ground in the garden so they can have a scratch around in it!)
