Title: separating hens
Post by: Shazzer on January 13, 2008, 18:22
I have a feather pecking problem at the moment, 3 of my 5 hens are getting pecked on a daily basis, I have ordered some purple spray but wondered if I should sepate them in the mean time.  I don't want to cause a situation where I can let them go back together so is it a good idea or not?  I was going to keep them as they are at night but put the two peckers on one side of the run separated by some chicken wire just a foot or so high so that the pecked hens can have a rest and re-grow their feathers.

That might be a good idea Shazzer. Make sure they can see each other all day and put them back together after you have given the bare bits a spray.

If the pecking continues we'll have to think of another way to deter them.

How about the saddles meant for when a cockerel is too vigorous or is it in a different place?  Maybe you can make them some t shirts

I've not used bumper bits Richy but I did have to use an anti-peck ring for a while.

I'd recommend other types of spray first if the purple one doesn't work.

Rings are a last resort  :(

They taste nasty Shazzer.

There's quite a few on line- suppliers.  I've just added a few here :
