Are these peppers or chillis. The plant was gien to me via freecycle and branded as pepper but I'm not so sure now.
Could anyone tell me?

They do look like chillis 

You can get long thin peppers though, but usually they have thicker kind of look than these

Yes I'm not sure. My reasoning being that i they were peppers they would be a bit larger by now. They seem to have stop growing. I was having doubts as I got given two plants (this one being one o the two) and the other one turned out to be chillis, or so I think, as they are very thin & long & starting to turn red which I am very pleased about.

Will try one in a few weeks in case they start growing a bit more.

OH recons that they are stunted peppers pos because they are under nourished ? In a pot / pot bound/ lack of sun. Hers started like that in the green house / growbags then started swelling into " pepper shapes "

I grew Bulgarian pointy peppers this year and they looked the same as that (were'nt hot chilli flavoured)..... and they went red in the end, but I don't think yours will now.
Mine stopped growing/ripening in sept so I just chopped them up and froze them.

I agree, I have some jalapenos, and they look exactly like that. if we are correct they will start to turn yellow soon.

Just bite in to one you'll soon find out . They look like chilli's to me

I think the separation between "peppers" and "chilis" is fairly arbitrary, with some people just using "sweet peppers" and "hot peppers" as the names and then lumping the whole lot into "peppers".

If you mean "do these look like they'll be hot" then it's kinda hard to say too - they look like they could be immature large pointy sweet peppers (like ramiro?) or they could be any of a massive number of hot peppers/chilis

I realise that I've not been terribly helpful   So I'd go with the others & say you'll find out how hot it is if you try one

ps I don't think they're jalapenos, they tend to be smoother thechileman has a massive database to browse
