Ducks and chickens together?
« on: June 01, 2010, 14:40 »
I have 5 young runner ducks and 3 cayugas. Will they live happily in the same run as my hens? The hens' run is about a quarter of an acre. I'd love to let everything free range and just come in on an evening, but I am fed up of feeding the local fox now. So, all in together, or divide the run? My husband seems to think the ducks won't let the hens at the food.

Hello, I have both and they all live very happily together.  They have to have a separate house, as chickens like to roost.  It's more likely that the chickens will chase the ducks off the food, although if you put enough feeders down that shouldn't be a problem either.  I love having both.   :D

More likely the hens won't let the ducks   Mine co-exist happily on the whole, the chooks if anything are at the TOP of the pecking order - my two drakes tried it on with them and soon learnt that wasn't a good idea! I have multiple feeders anyway so there are never feeding problems. I too have had to put all into a run due to Mr Fox taking his pickings

Cara also puts the ducks corn in a bucket of water so supposedly the chickens won't get it but Dizzie Lizzies ASBO hens got in the bucket to get it
Staffies are softer than you think.

Fab! And a good idea about the ducks' corn too. I would much rather have one big tidy run than lots of little subdivided areas. I have a separate house for them already.
