The best new thing that you have grown this year
« on: August 23, 2019, 12:26 »
For me it is French Tarragon. I have no idea why I haven't grown it before but my husband (the cook of the family) is thrilled with it. I have a new mini greenhouse in which it is thriving.

Ooh, haven’t heard of Dosakai before but have looked it up and that sounds great. I’m really pleased with my soy beans - I have a great crop. I haven’t yet tasted them but hope it will be a good addition to my summer bean fest

As this is my first growing season, I'll have to say everything is new and everything has exceeded my expectations!

My best are cauliflower, brussel sprouts (waiting for Christmas day) and various chillies.

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Flyaway carrot. Beats the carrot fly.

Edit: Just pulled another row. Carrotfly damage evident. I think I should withdraw this recommendation

My Jostaberries.
The Husband and Eldest both hoovered them up and once they were full or what I had picked got a bit squishy they made a lovely jam. Especially mixed with gooseberries and the pulp from whitecurrant jelly.

I need to get some French Tarragon, it was sold out when I was buying :(.
Any tips on caring for it?

Any tips on caring for it?
1. Really well draining soil. I have mine in a pot. I mixed John Innes 2 with horticultural grit and put a layer of grit in the base.
2. Lots of sunshine. It is in the sunniest corner of my greenhouse.
3. Mulch. The roots are very shallow and can dry out.I have used a layer of Strulch.
4. Frequent gentle watering from above.

I have a good article I will try and find and post.

I found mine on Amazon sold by Country Climbers and Garden Favourites, it was the only place that I could find to buy. I was a bit anxious about buying from Amazon but the plants were healthy and superbly packaged. They still have some left but is rather late in the season.

Here is the article https://dengarden.com/gardening/How-to-Grow-Tarragon

I hope that this helps  :)

All the soft fruit, gooseberries, apples raspberries in abundance.
Such a heavy crop on one apple tree it toppled in the wind but it’s now propped back up and doing ok

celery

I never bothered trying to grow it before, but picked a 50p sale packet of seeds up last year, and thought I would give them a go.

not only are they absolutely lush to eat, its been great just to snip off a couple of stalks at a time when a recipe requires it.

will definitely be growing again, perhaps just not as many plants as this year :nowink:

Kohl rabi, a suprise success and really useful in the kitchen. They have a taste which is turnipy but the texture of apple so julienned into a stir fry they add taste but keep their crunch. Was only trying them out this year but they may have earned their place in next years plans...
