Seaweed
« on: April 12, 2010, 16:53 »
I have read somewhere that seaweed can be used as a fertilizer as I am thinking about using it for our plot.
Anybody got any thoughts about it ??

I use  Maxicrop seaweed extract. £3-£4 a bottle, lasts ages and works well. And it's certified organic.

Every year after digging i use seaweed meal. It contains alginates that break down and help all the good squimy things. Each year digging seems less hard to do. Plus i use a Maxicrop product for leaf spray. F B & B on the ground

I live right by the sea and collect seaweed every year to use in my garden.  I tend to wait until late autumn and dig it in to my beds so it can rot down over winter, it also makes a great mulch.  I  make my own liquid feed from it by chucking equal amounts of kelp and water into an open water butt and giving it a mix every couple of days after it's stewed for around a month to 6 weeks and the liquid resembles a weak tea it can be used, tomatoes love it :D
Should mention here that the reason I use an uncovered butt is so that the rain water keeps topping it up (yes, we get a lot of rain here ::)) and this ensures that it is not too concentrated you can always keep topping up the water level till you get the "weak tea" look.
I also normally leave my collected pile out in the rain for a few days just to get rid of excess salts before I use it ................and a word of warning it does tend to stink for a while  :tongue2:

I am also lucky to have written permission to go collect seaweed from the local beach when there is a glut.

Use it same as jabberwock - seaweed tea in an open rain butt. Having it soaked in a water butt keeps the flies off it.
