Prize survey when you log out - problem
« on: January 20, 2021, 00:59 »
I don't usually log out when I finish using this forum, but earlier this month I did - late evening/ early morning, a bit sleepy.  Perhaps foolishly I did the survey which pops up at the end, was told I had won a mobile phone, and send £1 for P&P. Of course they ask for your bank details to collect the £1.  The £1 debit showed up on my online bank statement.
Then, 4 days later, another debit to the same address appeared, for £49.95.  The payee is shown as Strength pakek4.co.  I've tried looking them up to contact them, but no luck. Maybe they will try claiming further payments...?
So I've been doing the very tedious online chat with HSBC to try to reclaim that £49.95.  I understand that HSBC will temporarily refund me that sum, though they will claim it back again if they get no joy from the payee.  And are cancelling my debit card, repacement will take about a week to arrive, which is a nuisance as I haven't been using cash during the pandemic.
Maybe a new mobile phone will eventually arrive in the post from them, but I imagine not. I feel very foolish to have caused myself this bit of bother...
I'm curious to know if any other forum users have encountered this 'prize survey', and whether this is a phenomenon that has just tagged itself onto this site (and perhaps other sites), and whether the site hosts and organisers are aware of it.....?

Just to be clear, when you log-out the page confirming that you have logged out carries an advert served by Google. I don't have much control beyond specifying not to carry a class of adverts (gambling being the main one)
Anything I directly promote I am careful to check out and have gone as far as to do a 'mystery' purchase to check out the service etc.
I'm sure Google don't want to carry scams but they are very automated and things slip through.
Google adverts are used to fund millions of web sites and basically are the only game in town for funding sites like this. There are specialist advertising networks for topics we don't cover like 'adult'.
The net is the wild west in many ways - watch out for bandits always.

I literally just did the same thing then I read your post and got on to my credit card company immediately to cancel the card. Unfortunately, or fortunately they are fully aware of this.  I’m sorry this happened to you but thank you for posting because I would not have noticed the money crediting to my credit card.
