Cheap washing up bowls work very well as they are quite deep and you only need one or two for lots of leeks. With a few holes poked through the bottom they are big enough for leeks to be sown in and grow in until planting out. Half of mine have gone out, still got the other half in a washing up bowl waiting for the first earlies to be harvested.

what do you feed the leeks when they are still in cat litter trays?  Mine are still very thin.

I give mine tomato plant feed. Its easy to just splash some on while I've made a mix up to do the toms. I do the same for anything im growing at home to put out on the plot later.

Also, I decided last year that it was unwise to hold off planting out while waiting for that magical pencil thickness. A neighbour put his in early and they romped away. I put mine in a few weeks later and they never caught up. Mine are all in now.

In short, Colin, get whatever leeks you can find (pencil-thick or not) and get them in the ground. I've got about 60 already growing quite nicely and I'll be putting in some late-harvest leeks (probably at the two or three-leaf stage depending on what I can buy) towards the end of July, early August. It's too late to sow seed but if you can get plants, you'll have something worth picking.
