hello all,

As some of you may be aware my plot, like many others, suffers from flooding over the winter months. I'm not able to do a lot of things but am slowly building up the beds to a height above the "water table".
Anyway just came back today to find my plot to be under 2 FOOT of water due to a burst water main (now being repaired) which happens to be only yards away.
So all my hard work has gone down the pan, cabbages & spouts ruined, beds look like they'll never recover in time for first sowings !

Just thought I'd get it off my chest.....But feel like jacking it in..........

ps I've e-mailed Thames Water and asked about compenstation.......Won't hold my breath........

BUT It may just be that the mains pipe has been leaking for ages and that is why your plot was so very wet.

Once the mains is repaired your plot may be drier............so at least wait another year to see if things improve

how awful for you but hopefully after the repair has been carried out you can get back on track again

Sorry to hear that. I know haow difficult it is to deal with a perpetually waterlogged plot. Sounds a whole lot worse. See what happens once they've fixed the pipe. Chin up.

I think MOS has possibly hit the nail on the head. Stick with it - remember how much snow they were under in December, this all melted and the soil is fine now. You still have a couple of months or so until most stuff has to go in.

At least it's a problem that can be repaired, so just forget it and carry on. Gardening isn't a science and sadly, neither are our gardens. But the challenge can be a lot of fun.

Having slept on things and after all the hard work will let things dry out and start again.

Anyway I've just paid my rent for another year so have to just cracj on and stop moaning!!!

Anyone know how to grow rice?

1. Cook
2. Put in open container somewhere warm and forget about it for at least 2 months
3. Check for whiskery growths.  If not long enough, repeat #2 for a bit longer.

Do you have raised beds?
If not why not try and get around the water logging isue with them?

My veg garden at the back squelches every year and I am always amazed at how it eventually dries out and then needs watering! If your soil is heavy, then raised beds are a good idea. Do not despair - it's that time of year when everything looks thoroughly wet and awful but when spring arrives.....
