Courgettes, how many??
« on: May 17, 2009, 17:31 »
I have 3 courgette plants that I have grown from seed. I like them, but my hubby isn't bothered about them. So how many courgettes do you get from one plant?? Obviously I don't want that many that I can't eat them all!!!!! and I can always use the space in the polytunnel!!!!  :D

Thanks
Louisa

One plant would probably be enough, 3 or 4 courgettes a week ?   - can you swap the others for anything else?

What variety are they?

You may be lucky and get a dozen off each plant or be unlucky and get a lot more. At the very most 2 plants should do you fine.

The variety is "TONDO DI PIACENZA " it is a round one, not sure how they compare in size to a normal courgette. If they are smaller, I suppose I will need more!!!!

I think 3 maybe too many, maybe stick with 2 plants as I can use the space in the polytunnel.

Thanks

If you are talking about growing them in the polytunnel permanently then I don't think they need that.  They would be fine outside, therefore saving you lots of space in the polytunnel!

I may have read it incorrectly, but I took it that Sheridal wanted them out of the polytunnel so she could use the space in there.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

We made the mistake last year of planting six, all of which came out as heavy fruiters.  As you can imagine, we were overwhelmed with the amount of crop we had and had to throw away lots of them.

I am happy to grow them in the polytunnel, however, I don't want to waste the space on too many plants, that produce more than I can eat.  I am also limited outside, as I have filled the beds with mostly potatoes and onions.

I could plant some between my corn - three sister like.

If I left one in the polytunnel, would I get crop sooner??

Thanks again for all the advice

They'd crop sooner, but you'd be wise to hand-pollinate them if they're inside.

That is not a problem, happy to do that if it means I get some earlier

As celjaci says one is probably enough, but it has to be a decent fruiter. I had three last year (outside btw) but one stopped producing, the remaining two produced more than I could use, so gave away loads. I have plenty of space this year, but I will still only be planting out three or four max.
I would expect them to fruit sooner in the tunnel, as long as you started them earlier. I have yet to have any germinate!  ::)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I grew a round one (sorry, can't find name!) and a traditional long one last year and found I got a smaller crop from the round one.
You can always make chocolate courgette cake if you get bored with them!!

THis is the one I like. Unfortunately I cannot fool my children any more, they are too suspicious! They are in their 20's though!
Somewhere I have a muffin recipe too but cannot locate that at the moment.

Ohhhh I love courgettes. So I planted 3 plain ones and then planted a couple of gold ones and some Lebanese and round ones and some patty pans. They are such a versatile veg. Great in stir fries, stews, soups, and grated and made up into fritters and then there is always bread and cakes and cookies and I even have a brownie recipe for them. YUM!!! I just hope my plants produce this year. The past couple I have struggled to get even one. Oh and have you all tried the flowers stuffed with cheese and fried. Ohhhh yum. Okay very hungry now. :D
