Welcome to the forum Jwebster2.

There are many on here far wiser than me who will have some helpful advice, but I've given up and sow into modules now. They don't actually seem interested in the seedlings once germinated.

Hello and welcome
On our site they tend to leave the peas alone once they have reached about 6inchs in hieght, the ones who sow direct surrond the peas with debris netting burried into the ground by about an inch or two, as they will burrow under anything not tied down. hope this helps

As usual I read the Subject wrongly: Mice eating peas...

Now peas like that would sell really well as many of us have had problems with mice at one time or other.... a patch of peas that ate mice would be popular
Sorry...

More seriously:
My dad always soaked peas in parafin before sowing them... this made the pea seed less attractive to the mice so they left them alone.

Me... as I'm happy to spend the time fiddling about... I make paper-pots and germinate the pea plants before planting them on the plot. Takes time and is a bit of a fiddle but gives 100% results - It is ok if you don't need loads of plants.  ;)

Learner  :D :D :D
Sow in modules  or  .........sow your peas and create a tunnel for them using chicken wire but sink the edges into the ground. This worked for me on my first year of growing peas. now I grow in modules and plant them out.
Pea seeds are like caviar to mice ;)

Mice are only interested in the seed, they do not eat green plants.

If your plants are being eaten then look for another culprit, pigeons, jackdaws, pheasants, sparrows.

If the leaves have knotches in the edges you have pea & bean weevils but these do not usually do much harm and the plants grow away from them.

If your plant stems are being eaten near the soil it is probably slugs but could be leatherjackets or cutworms.

Yeah, mine came throught the winter ok'ish didnot loose as many as some other plot holders, just as they started to find there feet these notches turned up on the leaves, i blamed the mice, wrongly. They have recoverd now, but i still started some of in pots for gap filling, next year i'll start of in pots and won't bother autum sowing.

my neighbours lotties all suffer with mice eating their pea seeds if grown directly into the ground , I've got no sympathy with them cos each year i grow mine in modules and have no problems with them, put them in the ground when they are about 2 inches high.I told my neighbours last year and they still try and risk it

a good technique is to use 4" lengths of platic box rain guttering, the curved type works also.undercover fill it with a good brand of compost and after blocking the ends off moisten it well.
scatter the peas over the top of the guttering and push them down to a 1 inch depth, top dress the guttering with more compost and cover with newspaper.7 -10 days later they are through.scrape a trench to the same depth of the guttering and simply slide the whole lot into the trench.water well and fill any voids, bobs ya uncle.
