I have read about solar mulch for greatly increasing the soil temperature and reducing weed growth.
It was recommended for  Melons in cool climes.
It sounds good f0r other things but they say it does not allow water to  penetrate.
Does anyone know where to get this stuff and what do think about it in general?

But on 2nd thought, they could be referring to clear plastic sheeting as a mulch. Does the solar bit, but you'd have to remove it when weather warms up or you'd fry young plant roots. I'm trying a red plastic mulch on my toms this year to see if it makes a difference against a control group.

I've used black plastic before to heat the soil around courgettes, made a ring of soil 3' in diameter around where I was going to plant covered it all in black plastic and planted through the centre, to water just poured it onto the plastic an it ran into the planting hole. I had bumper crop of courgettes.

Had a look at that web site for solar mulch and realised its what a local farmer uses on his strawberry feilds. He has acres of the stuff.

There was a farm near us that used that stuff last year and when the sun was shining on it and  i swore blind he had a river on his farm.
his crops looked mighty healthy though.
