Title: Is this a Brown Turkey fig?
Post by: Nobbie on August 08, 2019, 20:10
Last year I missed them as I was waiting for them to turn brown and they just went mushy first. This year I've tried one when it went soft and light green and it seemed quite nice, not hugely sweet, but pleasant enough. Is this the right stage to pick at? Does 'Brown' Turkey not refer to the fruit colour or do I have a different variety?

I would have thought they needed to be a bit browner than that, but perhaps yours is a green one.The usual way to tell if they're ripe is when the fruit necks wilt and the fruits hang down.

It looks a bit too round for Brown Turkey, which usually ripens later in the year than this and is a dark purply colour

If you post a pic of th leaves I could probably tell you more certainly... just one or two will do but I could compare with mine at the plot. At home I have a different variety and that ripens to the sort of colour yours is, although huge fruits (Brunswick) that are currently not grown to full size and nowhere near ripe

Here it is. Had another one today, seems perfectly ripe.

Well that does look like the leaves on our baby Brown Turkey. I would say just enjoy the fruit and be glad you have a tree that ripens fruit so early, although the ripening period give is usually July to September, so I guess it is smack in the middle, even if not as dark as I would have expected

Are the fruits red inside?

Could it be a Desert King fig https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwTjr0CgJ6k (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwTjr0CgJ6k)

Not as red as that, there is a central bit of red. Skin is a lighter shade of green than that. Useful pointer to ripeness though :)

Just as an update, I think it is a Brown Turkey, I was just unsure of what a ripe fig should look like and was put off by anything to soft. Just tried two off the plant, one was like the one in the photo and was pleasant enough, but the other was a deep purple and although very soft, was lovely and sweet :D.

I think I was expecting the ripe fruit to be relatively firm and was suspicious of ones that were very soft expecting them to be rotten and hence just chucked them rather than tasting them.

Still loads left to ripen :)
