Slugs and snails
« on: January 24, 2024, 11:24 »
Dear fellow gardeners,

The new growing season is upon us and the new battle of slugs and snails control will start also. I have used the granules, used beer traps but as this is Ireland it’s like carrying water to the sea.
I have been reading that eggshells and bark are very good to keep them away.
Has anyone experience using this method?

Look forward to your replies.

Hiya
we have quite a big plot and collecting enough eggshells is  and my experience with bark is that it just provides hiding places so rely on pellets although I've been looking at using wool on some raised beds, around the edges and individual plants, knitting strips from leftover and reclaimed knitting wool. It will depend how much time I have!!!!!

we had a real problem with slugs in our potato crop last year I put it down  to where we grew them but I have to say we did manage to control them on the raised beds using granular slug pellets these new pellets don't seem to disintegrate like the old ones they  but its not a cheap option but then you need to use them if your going to stop these critters attacking your brassicas

What granular slug pellets did you get?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

After an amazine success with beer traps back end of last year, this will be my regular method. :D

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Bark does not keep the slugs & snails away, it hides them beautifully!!  I do resort to pellets I wish I didn’t have too.
Wash your hands, stay at home, distance yourself

We’ve successfully used Nemaslug on vulnerable crops like potatoes.  Two applications at the right time, ie. end of June beginning of July when the tubers are beginning to swell.  This gives about 6 weeks slug free before they begin to recollonise again.

Reduce habitat, kill them when I go hunting for them and I will use some pellets at planting time. I only direct seed carrots and parsnips, everything else I raise in modules and plant out so they tend to grow away from any nibbles. I wouldn't bother direct sowing salads otherwise

the slug pellets we used Goosy was Vitax slug gone and bought some from Agrigem  I'm tempted to try what Auntie Suggests Nemaslug but obviously looking at cost at the end of the day and I'm not bothered what I use as long as it rids me of these damn pests once and for all  >:(

We’ve bought NO potatoes since our harvest, which started in June.  We’re  still eating PFAs and Picasso.  We grew 5 x 15 ft rows, for the two of us.
