Question about Orla Potato's
« on: June 18, 2014, 07:39 »
Has anyone grown Orla Potato's before. I am growing them this year and have noticed they are classed as an early main crop. T&M were selling them as a first/second early. I was growing Pentland Jav for my firsts this year but they still have no flowers on them, is it worth having a dig at the Orla to see how they are coming on

The Potato Database says they're early maincrop

I'd have a dig at the PJs first.

Thanks for the reply Lesley.
It is interesting that they are classed as an early maincrop and that is why I am growing them, but a lot of people grow them as a first early. it will be interesting to see how they come along during the season, people say that they have a fantastic taste !!!

I will take your advice and attack the PJ's as I am in need of some nice new spuds

I always grow Orla, they are delicious in taste and texture. Mine are normally ready to eat about the time of a second early, but can be left pretty much as long as you like and bulk up nicely without any appreciable change in taste. So very useful if you're not sure how many you'll want when.

I've grown PJ as well, it was definitely ready before the Orla. Moreover the Orla will be OK if you leave it a while and I don't know whether you could say the same for the PJ.

Thanks for the information TJ I am looking forward to trying them, do they store well like a main crop potato ?

Well I had a look at the PJ's and I am happy to report back that I have some nice spuds for dinner tonight, their a bit bigger than golf ball size that will do me.

I've never grown enough to store for more than a couple of months so I can't really say - sorry!

Hope you enjoyed the PJs
