I wondered though whether or not the rotovator would be hard on your back. I don't suffer back problems (did have tendonitis in both shoulders once) but have a small rotovator about the size of a Merry and by the time I'm done, my back definitely hurts. That little beast can really bounce around. Is this something you can risk? Or would a neighbour give you a hand?

Munty - Y'know what's weird? I have super heavy clay soil and I did the double digging thing with the manure in the bottom of the trenches... I had to redig it over (due to an attack of evil couchgrass which has been killed back by glysophate now) so I was redigging it today and I'll be darned if the manure was still down at the bottom and it would have been nowhere near where my onions could have gotten to it  :?  I'm thinking of just digging over then 2-3inches layer of well-rotted manure on top in the next week or so and let the worms deal with it over the winter... maybe it'd work better.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

i could get help but like to do things for myself

yeah it still hurts but not as bad as digging by hand.

the best thing is if i use the rotavator i can still stand upright where hand digging can leave me bent over for a couple of days.

thanks for the ideas tho

if you double dug then its incorrect  heather ,,,,,,thats for breaking up compacted soil the first spit that gets the manure not the second , what i suggest now is you have it rotavated to break it up and then this next winter add some more but only to the top spit ,add lime as well after you have dug it and manured put it on the surface ,, dont plant roots tho .1/2.oz to sq yard. you will then get away with spuds not being overly marked up   even if they are you can still eat em and no side effects

OK, newbie question - I've dug out a new bed, approx 1m by 10m out the back of the garden.

The soil was grassy, but only on the top. Having cleared that, I'm currently forking it over to break it up - it's full of large stones, a result of this house being built on the edge of a ploughed field.

Once I've dug it over once, I want to put a layer of manure in and let the worms do their thang over winter.

I assume 10sq metres doesn't require huge amounts of manure?

Where's the best place to buy a reasonablly small amount - and what sort of manure should I go for?
Veg? That's chips, innit?

Find a local stables.  They usually give it away free.  Chose stuff from the manure heap which looks old, the fresh stuff is too strong and would need composting.

If you look up riding schools, organic farms in you area, it won't be full of growth hormons and as Aunty says help yourself to it for the free.

Cool - 2 or 3 big stables around here. I assume I'll need a few rubble sacks to put it in?
