Birthing help for cats please!!!
« on: October 18, 2009, 21:27 »
Although I have lots of experience with cats and kittens, the one thing I have never even seen is a cat having kittens. My current foster, Evie, is due asap and I'm getting more nervous by the day. She has multiple boxes with bedding and a big covered cat basket to choose from, food, litter tray and lots of fuss. For those of you who have done this before help!!!! I'm teriffied of doing something wrong

The only thing that I can say is leave her to it :) She'll be fine I've stood over 11 kittens being delivered and the mums just know what to do :)

I did have to move Tiddles though as she decided the birthing box wasn't the right place and my bed was at 5am

Can't wait to hear news of tiny paws :D

Sarah :)

I was going to say something similar to Vember.
If there is one room/place you would prefer her to give birth in, then perhaps keep her there. Specially if she seems to be restless. But once they start I've never known one that needed help :)
I did once have to move a badly deformed kitten away from mum as it was distressing her so much with its squeels  :( and she still had more to come who needed her attention.
They also tend to clean up all the birthing 'mess' :) (Glad it's something I didn't have to do after giving birth  )
Good luck

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

The only complication with the little one is the fact that she is a very little one. Only just got her adult teeth through so nearly six months old. Her previous owners (b*******) dumped her once her belly was obviously pregnant, poor mite - so loving though. She's restricted to one room as she was chasing the other cats out of the house so needed her own space. She's very good about being restricted - even seems more content as she must know she is safe on her own in there.

There will be lots of photos - I'm relying on you guys to help me rehome these little terrors and mum in a few months time   Shes a pretty tabby, here's hoping for a ginger daddy and some lovely tortie terrors  :tongue2:

Tiger Lily had her first litter in Sam's sleeping bag under his bed, he woke in the night to her noises and has never really got over the shock  when he shone his torch under the bed :D she had her second litter (Riff Raff and co) in Pip's knicker draw  :D she threw all her knickers in the bin

She's learnt how to open the big wardrobe door - I suspect she will go in there when the time comes and ignore all the boxes and beds provided

You will be getting anxious posts when it starts though

When i was a ickle girl i stayed with my neighbours cat whilst she gave birth, she bit  my thumb the whole way through  Rather painful but a lovely experience. Good luck with yours, shame shes so young :)
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

I think we are nearing the start. Evie is now lying on her side, purring away, in her big box and blankets. Although, she could just be being a lazy cat and not bothering to get up, but normally she wants a fuss and demands it from you  Really, really nervous now, but good to know all of you are here with help  :D

Nope... still waiting. The vets are keen that if she hasn't started naturally within 48 hours to take her in for a c-section due to her small frame. The little ones are moving around kicking her sides, I saw little paws again  :D
