It's not working!
« on: June 25, 2007, 14:21 »
Hi

My veggie plot is not working! I'v planted some cucumbers and they are ok but every thing thats gone in as seed is not doing a thing.
I'm waiting for carrots, parsnips, baby leeks and runner bean all sown over 2 weeks ago.The plot was freshly manured and dug over a week before sowing, have I done something wrong or should I change my hobby?
Do you think it's anything to do with the weather and would a polly tunnel help to warm things up.
Our soil is high in clay by the way.

I'm no expert, but it wasn't fresh manure was it? As it needs to be very well rotted before putting anything into soil with manure on..

hi nicky

our peasand broad beans took longer than 2 weeks to

to start growing so they could still come, carrots and

parsips normaly fork when grown in manured soil

but still eatable ,took about a month for our parsnips

id give up on them but there doing well now :)

Not very fresh, although not entirely sure how old it was I didn't ask.
Do you think that is the trouble, my other veggie plot is ok but no seeds have been sown every thing in there was propergated in green house first.

Nicky you say you have a clay soil, sometimes after rain it can form a "cap" which a lot of seeds cannot break through, it's possible this has happened to you.
If the soil looks like a great smoothish slab rather than crumbs it has capped, bit hard to explain but once you have seen it you'll know what I mean.

You can avoid this happening by covering your seeds with multi-purp rather than raking back the soil to cover.

Hope this helps
