Potatoes in pots
« on: April 22, 2012, 22:50 »
Hi, Ive decided to grow in pots, I still have chitted first and seconds in my bathroom. Its still a bit chilly here but I am going to pot them and give up the lottie, I have a few extra large pots and grow bags, but have not got a clue what to pot them in, compost? also how far apart and how deep, because you would not get many in a pot would you????

It depends very much on the size of your pots, but the information in this Garden Organic factsheet is comprehensive and you should be able to adapt it to suit the containers you have.

i also have done some in compost bags cos the ground too wet here to even get my earlies in.
i followed the instructions from gardeners world, think i u tubed it.
50l bag i have put 3 tubers in, never grown in bags before so will see how it goes.
planted on 23 march and am now just seeing some greenery from a few.
these 2 take all my time, whatever is left the veggies get, poor hubby is at the end of the queue.

Ive grown spuds in bags and tubs for a while now mainly due to not having a plot before. But now ive got a plot im still growing in tubs as the beds are taking longer than i thought to construct and fill etc. Plus the weather is now terrible and its a struggle to do anything.

My advice would be make sure you feed and water them well or they will dry out very quickly and make sure you keep them covered in case of frosts.

I never fed my spuds in pots, but the watering was essential.  My experience is, don't expect a large crop - the pics in the seed brochures are very misleading, with pots crammed full of potatoes!  Mind you, maybe if I'd fed them ... who knows!

Multipurpose compost only contains enough nutrients for about 6 weeks of normal growth.  Potatoes are hungry plants.

In pots, I would add a small amount potato fertiliser, or either of the balanced fertilisers - growmore or fish blood and bone - when earthing up.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I sow potatoes in pots, I use polypots
I sow them in peat with added calcified seaweed for condition and Vitax Q4 for feed
I dig out a shallow trench 2' wide and sprinkle slug pellets and chicken pellets down. I then put the bags close together in 2 rows
Then I measured out 14" gap and do the same again
So I have them in 2 rows width, spaced 14" apart

OMG Carrot Man that sound like serious stuff, I thought I would get away with lobbing them in a few grow bags and a few plazzy pots. I better think again and get the fertiliser ready.  ::)
