I seem to be picking your collective brains a lot at the moment, so apologies for overdoing it a bit recently.

Anyway, today's question is about kohl rabi. I'm going to try this as this year's new vegetable. I'm not sure my oh will like it, but I've told him it's got the texture of water chestnut and the taste of mild radish. Info gleaned from other websites and dolled up a bit. (can't imagine him trying it if I tell him it's like broccoli stump!)

The people I'm thinking of getting in my next seed order from offer White and Purple Vienna, no F1s. Do you have any views about these old varieties or would you recommend a particular variety?

I currently have Ballot on the go. It's all I've ever grown so I don't know how that is as a recommendation. They are sweet and crunchy at tennisball size.

They should grow bigger than tennis ball size, like an average swede, say. We traditionally grew purple ones for storing.

However, there are very well staying white varieties too, for example Superschmelz, which is huge...

They really taste like broccoli stalks, the closest in flavour when raw, I think. I love...

When cooked it's rather sweet. He will like it. It's good in vegie soups and stews. We make so called 'sweet veg stew': carrots, peas and khol-rabi in white sauce. Children's menu and also nice with heavy meat/game.

Also they are good for stuffing, these larger ones. So are their leaves, like stuffed vine or cabbage leaves. Yami!

Thanks gobs. Sounds like it might go well in a Thai curry... That might make quite a good introduction in fact.

I grew Gigant several years ago which grew..... gigantic (!) and stayed tender at the size of a swede.

Nice, but we found them too much a hassle to prepare so haven't grown them since. Can't comment on the varieties you mention I'm afraid.

Grew them in seed trays then into 3" pots before putting out on the allotment.
