Title: What to grow over winter
Post by: AlaninCarlisle on September 22, 2011, 17:03
I'm in my first year of polytunnel ownership. I''ll shortly be cleaning out the last of the summer/autumn crops (which have exceeded all expectations). What, if anything, do you recommend I try and over-winter? I have a large propagator so germinating stuff to go in there is no problem and the polytunnel at 15ft x 22 ft is amply big enough to accommodate a few failures. Obviously I'll be growing lettuce, but what else can people recommend?

Ah, I love chard. Would spinach survive too?

Parsley does well, you can keep it going all winter and you can get ahead for next year with strawberries.

Strawberries, what a cracking idea. I'd already started about 80 runners off in pots for open-planting next year so I'll put 20 in the tunnel and hopefully get a crop end May. I suppose I can leave celery and celeriac where they are until needed. Same with half a dozen red cabbage that I put in there as there was no room at the time outside

Just remember that strawberries need a period of cold so that they will make flower buds.

and coriander will grow well under cover in winter too  :)

It's my first year with a poly and I'm asking have you grown Hispi cabbage before over winter with success?
I have winter cabbage young plants I was thinking of trying out in the poly, being winter cabbage I don't see why not having more shelter, what do you think, and would I be too late to plant cabbage seed in the poly now.
