bought one for curiosity managed to divied into 3 in autum and just planted out in there own bed in my orchard area. Anyone tried growing please?

saw them growing wild on river cottage are they the things that you have to dig down for and the root grows sideways ?? sorry I cant give you any help :)

I asked OH who likes to forage Ray Mears style for such things.
He finds them in well drained, poor soil in the partial shaded woodland edges and you harvest them when they flower by following the flower stalk down to the soil so you know where to dig. The roots are very fragile, so you need to dig carefully or you lose the nut.
He says they taste like a cross between water chestnut and cobnuts and are very crunchy :)

thanks sounds like I've planted them in the right place then orchard area in the shade of the hazel hedge
