ok so slugs hate salt..will a sprinkling of salt hurt the soil..it would sure get rid of slugs

Try just to sprinkle the slugs -not the soil.
A little doesn't hurt but if you're heavy handed it's not good!

Sprayed some caterpillar infested cabbage with salt water once, it got rid of the pests and the cabbages thrived. I believe cabbages in their natural state are a coastal plant.
