Climbing Roses
« on: August 29, 2012, 13:41 »
My roses have had a poor year very little flowers and stringy growth.

The leaves only tend to come at the end of a shoot and have small patches brown /black on them but do not look healthy .

Okay it is the end of their season but this has been through out any explanations and remedies what to do would be appreciated,

Thank you :(

Can you give us an idea of what type they are, where they are grown i.e. site, beds or pots, also type of soil and aspect, and how/when they were pruned. I suspect a fungal disease - probably black spot with all this wet weather. Do not despair - advice will come shortly.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

It sounds as though you need to do two things now

1. Prune the tems back to a healthy shoot, or if there are no new shoots, then a sound looking bit above a leaf joint

2. Clear away all the leaves that have fallen off, and take off any that look diseased. Put them in your green waste bin or burn them

and then in the spring two more things

3. Give the rose a decent mulch of well rotted manure (you can buy this in bags if you don't have any), or a dose of rose fertiliser

4.Use a spray specifically for black spot (most also prevent other diseases too such as mildew) as the new growth begins in Spring.

and tie in new growth in such a way that there is good air circulation around the stems. A further feed around June should see the right

Hope that helps

Mine look black patchy on the surface but underneath you can see it's cause by rust, so a spray that stops that as well would help - cover all bases.
Other than that I'd echo Sunshineband  ;)

Rather than pruning out the leader, i bend it back on it's self and tie it in that position. This causes all the bud's to break and you will get a lot more flower's on these new shoot's.
