Agapanthus---Albidus
« on: October 25, 2008, 13:29 »
Hi one and all
A good while since I last posted, but still looking in.
Quick question ref agapanthus, when is the best time to transplant and split them. As I have one which has grown in a large 20"square x 24" high pot, for the past 6/7yrs, now well and truely root bound, don't want to loose it, so I'm sure someone can offer some good advise.
Thanks in anticipation PAH- still  :) 'in

Hi, divide and replant fleshy roots in April or May.  You could try saving seeds then sow in April, keep at temperature of 55 to 59F , when large enough to handle prick some off.Transfer to 3.1/2 inch pots into potting compost and later transfer into 5" pots.  Then overwinter in a frost free greenhouse or frame and plant out next spring.  They will take 2 to 3 years to flower though.  Good luck.  Mrs Bouquet

Agapanthus like to be pot bound. If you are kind to them and spread them out in some good compost they will grow like mad producing lots of leaf but no flowers until they are pot bound again.
Split them in early Spring, just as the first signs of life are showing. Split them into clumps of roots and plant each clump in a sandy mix. The pot should be only just big enough so that they soon achieve pot bounness and will flower.

Hi and thanks to Mrs B and Salmo, realy do appreciate your answers to my question.
The other reason for transplanting them being, I've and others have noticed the soil/peat has become somewhat rancid, phewee rancid that is,
thanks again both PAH :) 'in.
