A (possible) sweetcorn success.
« on: August 01, 2022, 19:14 »
Good evening everyone,  where oh where is the rain? ? ?

A few weeks ago when the sweetcorn pollen was being produced I cut a few seed 'branches' from the sweetcorn head and popped them into a glass jar.  Lid on and a good shaking I had what apeared to be pollen in the bottom of the jar.

I removed the bits of stalk and rubbed the pollen into the silks, ensuring a good infiltration into all the silks.  After a quick look it seems it has worked, there are small yellow kernals right ut to the tip of the cobs. I tied red thread round those I had 'treated' and tomorrow morning I'll be gathering a few to futher inspect.  Fingers crossed, a laborious job but seems to work.

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Due to lack of space outside I grow mine in the greenhouse and when the tassels appear just tap the canes which then produces clouds of pollen everywhere! Seems to work for me.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Novel way to do it.

I have always just allowed the wind, even with a slight breeze this time of year to rock the plants.
Often as I walk by them, give them a brush and you can see it instantly doing its work.
