I wanting a really tame breed of chook but good egg layers at the same time. I have recently ordered some from a place up in Dunbar but have had to cancle because i cant get them home now (they were called Loham browns or something like that!)
I am having a lot of trouble even finding somewhere that sells chickens near me, but want a  really tame/friendly breed. I have heard gingernuts are just like this - but again i cant find anyone with these chooks  near me. Are there anyother kind that fit my bill so i can search for them?
Thanks in advance!

the gingernuts are the most common variety so there must be some near you.  They are called Isa Browns, Warren hybrids or brown hybrids and they'll give you an egg a day each  :D

MacDonald of Hexham 01434 684491
The Youngs, The Havens, Heatherwick, Otterburn NE19 1LY (no phone number for that)

North Tyne Rare Poultry 01434 681559

Isa Browns are the cuddliest, friendliest birds. Love 'em.  Lots of eggies too!

Not exactly a traditional breed though but good layers that's for sure.

I have to say my two cheeky girls (Light Sussex X RIR) are really friendly and are good layers too.

They were both sat on top of my head the other evening

Sarah, I got my 3 hybrids from a guy in Throckley for £1 a bird.  He was advertising in www.ad-trader.co.uk

Have a look in there under Livestock > Other Animals and you're bound to find something.

I've just done a search myself and arranged for a banty and 3 chicks to be picked up on Thursday!! (Pics will follow, I promise   )

Welsummers the name feels to me that it should conjure up thoughts of holidays in Wales not chickens.

Or is that just me?

Hum, can see what you mean - but actually Welsummers are a Dutch breed!

Have heard they're not the best layers ever, but nice-looking and good-natured.

We've recently got two Cream Legbars and two which are Welsummer/Cream Legbar crosses - but can't comment on laying as they haven't started yet!

Cream Legbars are supposed to be very good layers. Ours are certainly very gentle and funny.

I have one Cream Legbar cross and is a the most adventurous.  Can not comment on eggs as she is only 17-18 weeks old.

Nothing is going to beat the commercial brown hybrid in the egg laying stakes but I'm informed that Welsummers are reasonable layers of dark brown eggs.
