Title: autumn planted onions lifted early for spring onions
Post by: Lisbon67 on September 22, 2013, 20:35
Impulsively bought some 'Electric' red onions in the garden centre today even though I didn't need any. The packaging suggests lifting them after early growth to eat as spring onions - will definitely try this as my seed-planted scallions are always a disaster. If I plant them in (say) mid Oct, when will they be decent sized spring onions? Anyone tried this?

Only ever grown these as full size overwintering onions.  You can plant any onion variety close together and pick young as spring onions, leaving the rest to mature.  Interested to see if anyone has done as you suggest with this variety.  I didn't think any one variety was better than another for this approach.

I started using mine as soon as they were big enough, and they just lasted through until the maincrop that had grown flowers were needing to be pulled.  Then they lasted until the good maincrop was ready. so it worked out quite well and I haven't bought any onions since about March.
