Fig leafs dropping
« on: November 14, 2009, 19:37 »
Since the start of this month, both my Fig plants have dropped their leafs, one is now just a twig the other following suit, is this normal for Fig plants this time of the year?

Indeed it is. :) Mine lives outside in the soil, hard against a south-facing wall. It is now bare except for a load of underdeveloped figs that I'll take off soon. I tend to take them all off except for the ones about the size of, or smaller than, a pea. These will withstand the winter frosts and go on to develop next year.

Hope this helps.

Yes, figs do lose their leaves.  Its a natural part as most of other leaf dropping trees :D

The high winds have just taken the last of the leaves off my fig tree.

At what stage do you thin the figs out on the plant as i removed 70 small unripe figs picked a couple of dozen very nice ripe ones and still had to remove 50 walnut sized ones that stood no chance of ripening.

If we get a bit of sun next year i`d like to thin properly and get more ripe ones.

Any figs larger than the size of a match head need to be removed now, because they will continue to develop at the expense of these little baby ones, and then not mature because of the winter weather.

The baby teeny tiny ones are next year's edible crop  :)

Just snap them off gently
