Dahlia help please
« on: February 02, 2014, 11:45 »
I have only ever grown dahlia from seed before, but yesterday took delivery of 6 tubers.
At the moment they are in plastic bags with ventilation holes, in an unheated bedroom. What is best to do with them until it is warm enough to plant them. I do have a greenhouse but it will not be heated until April/May when the beans etc need to go out.
Also in one of the bags there appears to be a piece not attached to the main plant - will that grow if I plant it?
Sorry to appear a numpty, I am much safer with veg!

Try to keep them cool(frost free) and dark. Pot them up in spring and water. Plant them out when all threat of frost's are gone. Enjoy

Don't leave them in their plastic wrappers, Elaine. Better to store them in dry compost, somewhere frost free.

Label them though as if you are like me you can never remember which is which  ;)

Mine are under the staging in a veg crate, in the frost free greenhouse

Oh thanks sunshineband will get them out of the bags tomorrow and into some compost.
